Physical Therapy and Chronic Conditions - Spina Bifida

Powerful PT had a great opportunity to help support the awareness and research for Spina Bifida in May at the 2026 Walk-N-Roll at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, New York. The day was full of excitement and community. We were lucky enough to meet other warriors and hear their stories. Spina Bifida is a birth defect that happens when the fetus’ spine does not close completely. Luckily, it is detectable as early as four weeks into the pregnancy.

Everyone’s experience with this varies as it can range in severity. Some symptoms include mobility issues, bowel complications, skin abnormalities, and loss of sensation. One of the ways someone can better manage the condition is with physical therapy. The National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD) recommends physical activity for those with Spina Bifida— specifically children as it can increase their chances of a more active future. Other risks secondary to Spina Bifida include comorbidities such as obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, executive dysfunction, sleep apnea, and more. Spina Bifida as well as these potential comorbidities can be improved with physical activity and the assistance of physical therapy.

Physical therapy helps individuals remain active while staying safe. They are able to assist with flexibility training to improve or maintain range of motion as well as assist with stability and balance. Strength training is another focus to build muscle and overall reduce risk of injury.  Gait training, bed mobility and transfer training are also key components to maintain independence. Physical Therapists help make sure each movement is optimized and help push their patients to new personal records.
